Anna Brones
Welcome to The Good Dirt, Episode 4!
In this episode we talk with Anna Brones – a writer, artist, publisher and producer, working in a variety of mediums and including many topics, and also someone who we believe embodies the heart and soul of slow living in both her life and her work.
Anna has written numerous books, including Live Lagom: Balanced Living the Swedish Way and Fika: The Art of the Swedish Coffee Break. She’s the founder and publisher of Comestible, a print and digital platform devoted to stories and art about food, and the editor of the online food magazine Foodie Underground. Her work has been has been featured in the New York Times, Eater, Food52, BBC, Guardian, Sprudge, Women’s Adventure, GOOD, PUNCH, and more.
Anna also works as a papercut artist, creating graphic illustrations from a single piece of paper. Her papercuts are featured as chapter headings in the 2019 edition of Joy of Cooking, and currently she is working on the Women’s Wisdom Project, a series featuring 100 papercut portraits of amazing women and their insight.
Our talk with Anna touched on so many topics that are important to us in our messaging about slow living, sustainability, and creativity. We bring up questions such as..
“Is the slow living movement just a trend?”
“Where do sustainability and privilege intersect?”
“Where does choice become a responsibility?”
“How can we reclaim our creative time in an accomplishment oriented society?”
The discussion of our conventional assumptions about “spending” time and “wasting” time was particularly relevant to the theme of our Slow Living Challenge this week (… and yes, you can still sign up for the challenge!) Anna even touches on the technique which we’ve shared in our Week #4 prompts, which we’ve come to call “time gleaning,” What’s that? Tune in to find out!
